The Society for the Preservation and Conservation of Caldon Low Tramroads (P.A.C.C.T.)
Aims and ambitions
Our Society are actively fundraising to try to preserve and conserve this microcosm of industrial heritage and to increase the awareness and appreciation of these successive heritage railway engineering advancement assets and, their preservation and conservation for generations to come
The 4x historically significant Tramroads 1778 - 1927 used to operate from the Cauldon Lowe Quarry (now operated by Aggregate Industries), down bank through Garston and Whiston to Froghall Wharf in the Staffordshire Moorlands on the Caldon Canal, approx. 3 1/2 miles away.
The initial Tramroad of 1778 after getting its approval to build by Act of Parliament in those days, was the first in the world with iron tops to the wooden tracks and so, of international importance, let alone national or local significance.
The site of these 4x Tramroads in the Staffordshire Moorlands, with 150 years of railway technological development and, the input of such famous engineers as Sir John Rennie and James Trubshaw, is a unique microcosm. Nowhere else in the World is there a similar collection of railway development and technological advances available to see, in such close proximity together.
Our fledgling Society only formed about 18 months ago, due to ongoing threats from planning applications, natural erosion and destruction over time of the remains of these historically significant tramroads.
