Staffordshire Industrial Archaeology Society

 STAFFORDSHIRE INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY

Aims and Objectives:
To study and record by written, photographic and any other means the Industrial remains and techniques of outdated technology.
To further the interest in our Industrial Heritage.

Are you interested in Mills, Canals, Steam Engines, iron works, mines, transport, social history etc.?
Why not explore our fascinating industrial past by joining the Staffordshire Industrial Archaeology Society

Our Role:
This can be seen as threefold
1. We act as a forum in which people can indulge and develop their interests (whether specialist or catholic) in this very wide subject.
2. We assist where appropriate in the preservation of buildings, artefacts, and documents relating to Industrial Archaeology.
3. We aim to encourage public interest in Industrial Archaeology.

Our Activities
There is a programme of talks, visits, restoration and fieldwork. Several members undertake their own projects and our journal is a vehicle for the publication of some of their research.
Staffordshire Industrial Archaeology Society has good contacts with other societies of similar interests nationwide and is affiliated to the Association of Industrial Archaeology. Also we are in touch with local County and District Councils and often give our opinions on sites which may be threatened by demolition or redevelopment.

Restoration and Fieldwork.
Measured and /or photographic surveys are undertaken from time to time, of interesting or threatened sites.

 Talks
Illustrated talks by local and national speakers take place from September to April, usually on the fourth Monday at Tixall Village Hall, near Stafford, at 7.30pm.
We aim to offer the widest range topics to increase our interest and enjoyment of the Industrial past.

Visits
The society has an annual coach based visit with the Midland Mills Group to mill sites not normally open to the public.
A particular advantage to members is that as a Society we can often gain access normally refused to individuals. Some of these outings are by coach and others are more informal walks, led by a member who lives locally and who perhaps has little known derelict mill or overgrown canal up his sleeve.

All are meetings are suitable for family groups (evening events tend to finish around 9.00pm, suitable outdoor clothing required on the site visits.)
To belong to Staffordshire Industrial Archaeology Society you do not need to have a serious academic interest in Industrial Archaeology, nor do you need to reside in Staffordshire.

As a member you will receive newsletters, a copy of the occasional journal, details of all visits and lectures and the opportunity to join local walks and social evenings.
