the historic county of Staffordshire

THE WILLIAM SALT LIBRARY AND STAFFORDSHIRE HISTORY CENTRE  PROJECT

About Us

The group was set up in 1997 to provide a forum for the many historically based groups in the county of Staffordshire.
The historic county includes many areas that do not correspond with the current administrative regions.

These include The Potteries, the Black Country and a number of towns and villages that have now been incorporated into Shropshire, Derbyshire Cheshire and the West Midlands.

The current County Council only covers a small part of this historic county that has made major contributions to the nation

We are an umbrella group for all the local history, genealogy and archaeology groups within Staffordshire, which meets four times a year in Stafford.

We promote, maintain, and encourage good practice, research, preservation of records and historic buildings  and collaboration with other interested bodies in connection with local history, genealogy and archaeology.

There are two classes of membership, Group and Individual. The majority of people are members of member groups, but anyone with an interest in our activities is welcome to join.

Picture
Staffordshire really stands out in history, from its Stone Age origins, through Roman and medieval times to modern industrial life. We have towns and villages with churches, castles and stately homes reflecting the unique identity of our area.

Whether it is local history, archaeology, preservation of traditions, or support for particular causes, our members have one thing in common, their devotion to the county of Staffordshire.
