Newport History Society

NEWPORT HISTORY SOCIETY

The Aims:   of our active Society is to research, and make known, the heritage of Newport town and its surrounding villages. A section of our members hold weekly sessions of field walking, metal detecting and occasionally digging in local fields in Shropshire and Staffordshire.
We have a large collection of finds some of which are displayed in our Heritage Centre in Newport's ancient Guild Hall.  We have produced a Heritage Guide to the town and a variety of books and leaflets available from the Centre.  Our Shropshire Newport Archive Photographs project has placed more than 5000 images on our website. The Centre also houses our large archive collection a catalogue of which is on our website.
Meetings:  During  Autumn, Winter and Spring  we have monthly meetings at Cosy Hall, in  Water Lane Newport, where speakers talk on subjects of local history.  In addition, we have Planning Meetings for members at the Swan in Newport.  In the Summer we visit places of historical interest.
Copies of the current programme of talks are available at the Centre, Newport library and on our website.
